WAPELLO, Iowa — One of three alternate routes for expansion of U.S. 61 near Wapello apparently has been dropped as a possible option by state transportation officials.
Louisa County Engineer Larry Roehl told the Louisa County Board of Supervisors this week that a proposed five-lane highway expansion through Wapello apparently was no longer under consideration.
Roehl said that option was dropped because of the large effect the expansion would have on businesses and residences in the community. Two other routes that would bypass Wapello to the west remain options.
A meeting on the potential routes has been scheduled from 5-7 p.m. April 24 at the Briggs Civic Center in Wapello.
In other action during the supervisors’ meeting, Dan Eberhardt, of the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission, presented final documents closing out buy-out and recovery projects in the county from the 2008 flood.
