An expanded USO center at the Rock Island Arsenal will open today.

The 2,000-square-foot space serves as a “home away from home” and military community center operated by the USO of Illinois. The center features a meeting space and lounge, reading library and resource center, computer lab with free Wi-Fi, cable TV and gaming console, snacks and refreshments and a children’s play area.  The newly renovated space, adjacent to Army Community Services, will serve  active duty, National Guard and Reserve military and their families and retired military personnel.

An open house will be held from noon to 5:30 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting at 1 p.m. and a USO Discovery Kids event from 4-5:30 p.m. by Figge Art Museum called “Picture Our Littlest Heroes” where area military kids learn about the art of portraiture as they create their own works of art to take home.
