VIOLA, Ill. — A Viola woman who died Saturday after being found beaten in her back yard died of head injuries that “likely were the result of an assault,” Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said Tuesday.

Ingersoll said an autopsy was performed Monday on 39-year-old Melissa White.

According to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department, Viola Police and sheriff’s deputies were sent to 1304 14th St., for an emergency medical call. When they arrived, they discovered White.

She was taken to Mercer County Hospital, then transferred to OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, where she died Saturday.

Ingersoll said there will be an inquest when the final autopsy reports are available.

White’s death is being classified as suspicious, Ingersoll added.

The Viola Police Department and Mercer County Sheriff’s Department are conducting the investigation.
