WAPELLO, Iowa — A small increase in the base salary and a new compensation program for coaches highlight a contract agreement reached last week between the Wapello Education Association and the school district.
The school board approved the 2013-14 agreement during its May 6 meeting.
The two sides settled on a $150 increase in the base salary, which will raise it to $28,080. The agreement also will include normal step movements on the salary schedule.
The district will assume all health insurance increases for next year. The district will pay $524.01 toward a full single policy and $1,163.12 per month for a family policy. Employees will continue to pay $146.85 a month toward family coverage.
The two sides also agreed to changes in the coaching contracts.
Varsity head coaches will be paid from 12-16 percent of the base salary, with the pay annually increasing by 0.5 percent. Once the 16 percent threshold is reached, coaches will receive a pay increase every five contractual years.

Other provisions in the agreement included adding poms to the supplemental schedule and removing stage band, high school basketball chaperone, adult education, junior high cheerleading, newspaper, junior high chaperone and high school volleyball chaperone from the schedule.
Both parties also agreed to changes in personal leave and seniority changes.
