ROCK FALLS, Ill. — Water service is being restored to the northern Illinois city of Rock Falls.

City police say in a statement Friday that water service would return to the community of 9,000 residents around 8:30 a.m.

Rock Falls had to shut off the water Thursday afternoon because of what authorities said was a "sanitation infrastructure failure."

Crews worked to remove raw sewage after a pump stopped working at the city's sewage facility.

A boil order will remain in effect until Sunday morning.

The community set up an emergency operations center at Rock Falls City Hall to distribute water to residents. While the water was cut off, the city asked residents not to flush toilets and even those with private wells were asked not to use their water.
