Judy Hyland, a Davenport piano teacher, was chosen 2012 Certified Teacher of the Year by the Iowa Music Teachers Association.

The award honors a nationally certified teacher for his or her contribution to the profession.

Hyland received a bachelor’s degree in piano from St. Ambrose University and a master of music degree from the University of Iowa. While maintaining an independent studio in the Quad-Cities and teaching part-time at Marycrest International University, she founded the Quad-City Music Teachers Association in 1989, serving as its first president from 1989-1991.

She was co-founder of the organization’s annual monster concert and also a founding member of the Digital Dames, a five-member keyboard ensemble. She has served as vice president of the Iowa Federation of Music Clubs, convention co-chair of the Iowa Music Teachers Association, and adjudicator for state and local auditions and festivals.
