Adam Weckel, 11, son of Julie and Jamie Weckel of Bettendorf, will serve as Kid Captain for the Iowa Hawkeyes’ football game against Purdue on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.

Adam was 9 months old when his parents noticed his left forearm was swollen. Doctors determined the swelling in Adam’s arm was caused by a cancerous tumor, and the toddler was diagnosed with extraosseous Ewing’s sarcoma. Adam’s left forearm was amputated to give him what doctors said was his best chance of survival.

Now in its fourth year, the Kid Captain program is a partnership between University of Iowa Children’s Hospital and the Iowa Hawkeyes to celebrate inspirational stories.
