Rock Island police now are saying it is possible the woman who suffered serious injuries Tuesday in a bicycle crash in Rock Island may not have been struck by a vehicle.

Deputy Police Chief Jeff VenHuizen described the victim as a 21-year-old woman, but he declined to identify her by name or to confirm whether she is an Augustana College student.

The woman was discovered by a passerby, he said, who found her lying in the area of 29th Street and 7th Avenue at 6:49 p.m.

“We’re still investigating,” VenHuizen said Wednesday. “Was this a hit and run, or just a crash on the bicycle itself?”

The woman sustained “significant facial injuries,” he said, adding her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. She remained Wednesday afternoon at Trinity Rock Island.

Asked whether a student was involved in the crash, a spokeswoman for Augustana College referred all questions to the Rock Island Police Department.
