The Young Emerging Writers (YEW) summer internship program will host a free launch party for the public for their magazine The Atlas on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at 6 p.m. in the second floor community room at the Rock Island Public Library, 401 19th St., Rock Island. Readings start at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be available. For more information, contact Ryan Collins at firstname.lastname@example.org, call 309-732-7330, or at 309-269-6569.
The program is composed of students, ages 15-19, who applied and were interviewed to participate in the selective paid internship program. This summer, 16 interns from around the Quad-City area participated in YEW.
YEW provides writing instruction in a variety of writing styles and processes, and develops professional skills in areas such as editing, collaborative project management, and magazine design. In 50 hours over seven weeks, students went from meet-and-greet to producing a high-quality literary magazine. This summer, the YEW program celebrates the release of the 12th volume of The Atlas. It will be available for $7.50 (usually $10) at the launch, and all back issues cost $5. After the launch, they will be sold at Exotic Imports in Moline, the Midwest Writing Center, and online.
