We look to at-large aldermen to lead on citywide issues and that pretty much assures our continued support of Gene Meeker. The enthusiastic downtown cheerleader has stepped up to pilot citywide economic development as well, keeping the council's eye on growth, the goal that enables almost every other municipal goal. We've found Meeker to be accessible, forward-looking and a critical part of the council's more collegial, effective atmosphere.
Two new candidates inspired us with the promise of fresh ideas and ideals. For this election, we lean toward Robby Ortiz, who brings unique experience as a small business owner and - what we believe would be a first for the council - firsthand casino experience. Ortiz's work at Emeis Park and on the city parks advisory board gives him a head start and demonstrates commitment to his city.
Jason Gordon impressed us again. We recall his excellent service as a district aide to Iowa First District Reps. Jim Leach and Jim Nussle and valued his ideas on downtown residential development.
Former 3rd Ward Alderman Keith Meyer is seeking to rejoin the council battle he waged for two terms until ward voters unseated him in 2007. For this candidate, we find ourselves in agreement with the Third Ward voters.
