In doing a quick statistical check, I determined that it's my privilege to talk to or meet about 75 or 80 senior citizens who are 60 years old-plus a week. And always the same question is asked: "Know of any new places we can go that are reasonably priced?"

In fact, that was a major question asked by Emma Pachon, a potential new resident of the area, during a tour of senior housing sites.

I'm always quick to answer, "Don't miss a weekly visit to the Freight House Farmers Market." Then comes the question: "What's that and how far out in the country is it?"

I realize now that I need a stack of farmers market brochures!

But then I explain that it's a short trip to the downtown Davenport levee on the banks of the Mississippi River.

During the warm-weather days, it's a sight to behold, with hundreds of people browsing and shopping the many outdoor vendors selling fresh farm veggies and produce, and a host of other items perfect for gifts or home use. You can even get a shoulder massage!

The good news, I explained, is that it will now be moving inside the Freight House, a historic railroad building, and will be open year-round.

Steve Ahrens, the development director of the Levee Improvement Commission, tells me the hours are 3-6 p.m. Tuesdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. For November and December, the market will expand further into the Freight House to accommodate more vendors and customers.

The address is 421 W. River Drive, with ample and accessible parking.

And for those seniors who have a transportation problem, yours truly is working to provide a Senior Freight House Express!

Visitors can expect exciting events and new vendors during the holiday season. And watch for holiday lighting to enhance the shopping experience. Also, families will want to bring the kids Dec. 18 when Santa visits the market.
