Everyone knows the route that “winds through St. Louie.” Now, after years of advocacy come signs marking another coast-to-coast U.S. highway that winds through the Quad-Cities.

The first “Historic U.S. 6” signs are up in Davenport, fulfilling a long-time goal of Iowa U.S. Route 6 Tourist Association director Dave Darby. Darby and other Route 6 fans across the country have assembled photos of sites and memorabilia of the Cape Cod, Mass., to Long Beach, Calif., highway.

The new signs identify a route carved up and rerouted through modern interstates, but abounding with vestiges of the mid 20th century development that welcomed waves of cross-country vacationers.

Some of those vestiges, like Wilton’s Candy Kitchen, are among hundreds of photos Darby posted at public.fotki.com/DWDarby. Check out his Route 6 collection and it’s likely you’ll gas up and follow the new signs over an old route.
