For years, veterans have wanted to salute the flag during the "Pledge of Allegiance" and "The Star Spangled Banner," rather than place a hand over heart. As previously reported, veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel were authorized hand salutes during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag effective Jan. 28, 2008. As of Oct. 14, 2008, we veterans can now render the military-style hand salute.
