The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Davenport, publicly denounces the hateful rhetoric that has swept into our country’s current political discourse. Negative references regarding minorities and the poor are far too commonplace and LULAC deems such language unacceptable.
Republican U.S. Rep Steve King from Iowa’s 4th District is one of the most volatile politicians in this country in terms singling out groups of people and branding them as the root cause of what he believes is America’s “problem.”
He has publicly stated that white people have contributed more to the advancement of civilization than any other “sub-group of people.” And most recently, he proclaimed our civilization cannot be restored with somebody else’s babies. This man’s remarks foster fear-mongering and scapegoating of minorities.
To think that Congressman King might choose to resign from his office because LULAC would like him to do so is naive, so we won’t ask. Our hope is that, while his philosophy might appeal to some, most people will choose to reject Steve King and any other elected officials who attempt to fill the American people with hate.
