People driving on Brady Street, Kirkwood Boulevard and McClellan Boulevard in Davenport are noticing an uptick of runners and walkers. Spring has beautifully sprung and the emerging “scent” of the Bix 7 road race No. 43 is in the air.
It’s May already, and the Bix 7 isn’t until July 29, but the Bix at Six training runs begin on June 22. Our Bix 7 is all about community. Competitive and non-competitive runners and walkers come from all over, but the spirit of the race is right here in the Quad-Cities area.
It is an annual salute to our own Davenport native Leon (Bix) Beiderbecke (1903-1931) who positively transformed the world of jazz in his tragically short, but very productive 28 years.
So many people deserve praise for their on-going success of the race. Certainly a must on that list is veteran race director Ed Froehlich (since 1980), and long-term sponsors like Roto-Rooter, a proud sponsor since the beginning, and the Quad-City Times which has been our heartbeat since 1981. Without the Quad-City Times, we would have no race.
So here’s a special thanks to all who work together like a symphony to present the Bix 7 each year. Who could have predicted back in 1975 what our race would become by 2017? So, drivers, please watch for us runners and walkers as we prepare for the race. What an exciting time of the year it is. Again, thanks Quad-City Times.
