School board election season is upon us. This election has one of the lowest turnouts statewide. Please remember to vote on Sept. 12 in this important election.
My service on the Bettendorf Community School Board for 11 years has been rewarding. Hopefully those who are running for school board have done their research. Do you really know what a board member does and what will be asked of you as you serve your four-year term? Are you willing to abide by the roles of a board member outlined by the Iowa Association of School Boards? Do you have a personal agenda that might be better suited to committee or school level involvement instead? Have you talked to board members, district-wide staff, teachers, parents, and students about the role of school board member who represents all children and all schools?
Voters, do your homework, too. Sept. 12 will be an opportunity to bring new life to the school board – be a part of it by being an informed voter. School board elections should not be a popularity contest. Vote for candidates who will add value to the work of the board and help our district leaders move school districts forward. Understand the role of board member. Talk to the candidates. Attend board meetings. Read minutes or listen to audiotapes of past meetings. Attend candidate forums in your district.
And, most important, vote. Stellar schools are our community’s greatest asset. Ensure our children continue to receive a high-quality education by voting on Sept. 12.
