A political housecleaning is overdue. We must have an independent investigation into the Russian mess because too many Republicans cannot be trusted to put country before party.

The Russian mess will not go away without knowing how to protect future elections and without knowing how or if the administration colluded with the Russians in the last election. Red flags abound and cynicism creeps in.

Besides the federal mess, in Iowa, the Republican-controlled Legislature declared war on the working class. Not too long ago, Iowa worked to keep people in the state, not chase them away.

The Legislature passed very mean-spirited laws such as the one restricting collective bargaining for public employees. Or the law gutting workers compensation. Still the most short-sighted action was under-funding education. We're told future jobs in the robotic era will require a better educated workforce than ever before.

Kudos to the Davenport West High School students for bringing home the world robotics championship. They are a perfect example of the cooperative strength we need in leadership and government.
