"Build it and they will come" is from the movie "Field of Dreams" that has become an adage. In 2013, the Davenport Parks and Recreation Department built a Dog Off Leash Area (DOLA) at a city-owned green space on Marquette Street. In 2015, the play areas for large and small dogs were expanded and handicap parking was added with a sidewalk. There's just one thing missing; dogs.
Several dog owners told me they found the DOLA by accident. The DOLA at Centennial Park is among the parks listed on the parks and recreation website, but the one in my neighborhood is not.
I rarely see the DOLA being used. When I walk my dog, we always stop at the park hoping someone will come in. I used to drive to the Bettendorf dog park because it’s almost always busy and discovered many other dog owners were from Davenport as well.
That dog park is larger, the terrain is varying and there's shade. My taxes however paid for my neighborhood dog park and I have decided to take my dog there. Recently, I was surprised to find several other large dogs there for him to play with. There were no dogs in the small dog area.
Parks are amenities that add to the quality of life in a community. It's a great way for your dog to get exercise and to meet your neighbors.
You are invited to the dog park on the 4400 block of Marquette Street. My dog would love to play with yours.
