Oren Selgelid

ROCK ISLAND - Oren C. “Swede” Selgelid, 85, of Rock Island, died Monday at his home.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednes-day at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today.

Mr. Selgelid founded and published the MoneysaveR shop-pers guide from 1968 until his re-tirement in 1980. In earlier years, he had coached football, basketball, track and baseball at Dike (Iowa) High School and later coached at Albert City (Iowa) High School,

Mr. Selgelid married Irene Gar-ner in 1935 in Grundy Center, Iowa.

He was a 1931 graduate of Upper Iowa University, Fayette, Iowa.

He started the Doc Dorman's Old Time Peacocks of Upper Iowa University in 1974. He was selected to Upper Iowa's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982 and in 1985, he re-ceived an honorary doctor of hu-mane letters degree from the university.

During World War II, he served with the Navy in the Pacific The-ater.

Mr. Selgelid was a former board member and trustee at Upper Iowa and a member of St. John's Lu-theran Church, Rock Island, and Moline American Legion Post 246.

Memorials may be made to Larry Selgelid Scholarship Fund, Smith College, North Hampton, Mass., or Michael D. Selgelid Scholarship Fund at Upper Iowa University.

Survivors include his wife; five grandchildren; and two great-grand-children.

Mr. Selgelid was preceded in death by sons, Larry, in 1981, and Michael, in 1988.

Mabel Steffen

ROCK ISLAND - Services for Mabel I. Steffen, 88, of 767 30th St., will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Dav-enport.

Mrs. Steffen

Visitation is 12:30-1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hodgson Fu-neral Home Ltd., Rock Island.

Mrs. Steffen died Monday at St. Anthony's Continuing Care, Rock Island.

She was employed as a sales clerk at the former Block & Kuehl, Carson-Pirie-Scott and Mr. Da-vid's.

Mabel Grimslid married August Steffen in 1964. He died in 1968. She married Chester Townley in 1925. He died in 1934.

She was a member of First Lu-theran Church, Rock Island.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Survivors include sons, Wayne Townley, Mesa, Ariz., and Wagner Townley, Taylor Ridge, Ill., six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Pauline Holzer

ROCK ISLAND - Services for Pauline I. Holzer, 73, of 2300 79th Ave., will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park.

Mrs. Holzer

Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Mrs. Holzer died Sunday at St. Anthony's Continuing Care, Rock Island.

Pauline Wil-liamson married Galon Rich Hol-zer in 1938 in Davenport. He died in 1991.

She was a member of Memorial Christian Church, Rock Island.

Memorials may be made to the church or St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Sylvia (Mrs. Anthony) Tarchinski, Eldridge, Iowa; two grandsons; sisters, Zelpha Foster, Pearl Smith and Loretta Smith, all of Rock Island, and Vivian Simoens, Silvis, Ill.; and a brother, Doyle Williamson, Prairie City, Ill.

Mrs. Holzer was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Steele, in 1994.
