(BPT) - Why do we love Lake Placid?
The Adirondacks' Lake Placid Region is the perfect choice whether you're planning a family vacation, romantic getaway or visit with friends.
Aside from the myriad outdoor activities, there are mom and pop shops to browse, Olympic venues to tour, high-end spas to indulge in, live music and family festivals to partake in, unique restaurants where you can get a true taste of the Adirondacks and cozy lodging to rest your weary head.
The only real question is: How will you invent your own perfect day?
In no particular order, here are 9 of our top picks for integrating a little local Adirondack fun into your winter getaway!
1. Ice Skating
Lace up and hit the lake. It's free, features a 2+ mile groomed skating loop track, and is open 24/7 — when the ice is deemed thick enough. Doesn’t get much better than that. Not 100 percent confident about skating on a lake? No problem, visit the skating oval on Main Street!
2. Cross-country Skiing
Park your car, clip into your skis and go! Whether you choose to make first tracks in the backcountry or kick through the groomed tracks at one of our cross-country ski centers, exploring our Adirondack trails is as fun for beginners as it is challenging for experts.
3. Dog Sled Ride
Is that barking we hear? Yup, as you stroll down Main Street on most winter days, you'll hear the unmistakable sounds of the dog sled team! Follow the whistles to the shore of Mirror Lake and you'll be greeted by mushers ready to take you on an unforgettable ride on the frozen lake.
Hear the squeals? Dig your flexible flyer out of the garage and get ready to tackle our favorite sliding spots. You’ll find kids of all ages flying down the hills at the Lake Placid Golf Course! For a tamer time, head to John Brown Farm where you can tow the kids through the fields. Looking for something a bit more extreme? Try the Toboggan Chute!
5. Fat Tire Biking
Pavement optional! Fairly new to the game, fat tire biking is quickly becoming a favorite Adirondack activity — even in the snow. Sporting larger-than-average tires, it didn't take long for winter lovers to discover these bikes are perfect for exploring our snowy trails and riding our frozen lakes.
6. Walk or Snowshoe
These boots were made for walking ... and we know why! There's something supremely peaceful about strolling in a winter wonderland. Whether you choose your favorite pair of warm winter boots and stroll around the 2.7-mile Mirror Lake Walkway, or strap on a pair of snowshoes and hit the Heaven Hill Trails, the Adirondacks are the perfect place to connect with nature.
7. Ice Hockey
Whether playing an organized game or looking for a quick pickup and some time shooting pucks, Lake Placid is hockey central. You'll find players of all abilities and ages on our indoor and outdoor groomed rinks. Of course, we know there's nothing like a spirited game of pond hockey — so hit the lake for an evening game before skating up to one of our cozy pubs or restaurants!
8. Downhill Skiing
Whiteface Mountain. 283+ acres of skiable terrain, 86 trails and 11 lifts. Need we say more?
9. Perfectly Quaint Alpine Village
Aside from the myriad outdoor activities, there are mom and pop shops to browse, Olympic venues to tour, high-end spas to indulge in, live music and family festivals to partake in, unique restaurants where you can get a true taste of the ADKs and cozy lodging to rest your weary head.
The only real question is: How will you invent your own perfect day? We suggest you start here!
