Most parents will always worry about their kids. Most parents will always harass their kids about where they’re going. And, most parents will always call you and your friends to make sure you are where you say you are.

Feeding foreigners is starving Americans
By Sandy McKay, Davenport | 15 comment(s)
I was listening to the news about a food kitchen that might be out of funds to continue feeding people in need. I just can’t figure out our government when it comes to things like this. How can the government spend so much money feeding people from another country and it can’t support our food kitchens and pantries?

By Robert Kuehl, Davenport | 9 comment(s)
It must be legal to fix prices now that we have special interest groups that act as monopolies. Certainly deregulation of energy supplies has paved the way for windfall profits and obscene corporate executive compensation, while the working class now requires both spouse’s incomes.

The six- block commute
By Daryl Empen, Rock Island | 6 comment(s)
First, I must make a confession. I work only six blocks from home, so I should have been biking to work a long time ago. I just always found an excuse not to — it’s raining, I have a meeting during the day that I have to drive to, I’m late, etc. I do walk sometimes and enjoy it when I do. But why not bike more? My challenge will be to look at my schedule and see whether I can bike to my meetings. Or worst case scenario, bike back home to pick up my truck.
I made it!

Wow, that was pretty easy. I went from Rock Island to Moline. I think it took me all of 10-12 minutes. It was a little colder than I was prepared for and the fingers were a trifle numb by the time I arrived. My commute is probably three miles.

McCain has his own minister problems
By Bryan Pattschull, Rock Island | 33 comment(s)
As I watch the difference between the press coverage of Obama’s relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and McCain’s embracement of Pastor John Hagee, it is my perception that the relationship receiving less coverage is the more problematic relationship.

Once upon a time, around 60 years ago, a local Iowa woman was strongly encouraged by the family doctor to seriously consider terminating her pregnancy, due to personal life-threatening health problems. Both she and her husband, being devout people of faith, determined together to entrust the matter into the hands of the creator, who they believed had bestowed upon them the privilege and responsibilities of parenthood.
