As usual, Quad-City Times Barb Ickes wrote a very informative article on Jan. 4 about new home construction on the Rock Island Arsenal.

The men and women wearing the uniform and protecting our freedom have my admiration and support, but I cannot say the same for those who are in charge of them. The new homes on the Arsenal averaged $670,000 each for the construction cost only. That amount does not include the land, which was already owned, or the planning and design.

A quick web search found numerous homes in Davenport with three plus bedrooms for less than $500,000 that are ready to occupy. This is clear evidence that cost was not a factor in construction of the homes on the base, which are preferred.

The United States is $20 trillion in debt and rising. We should all support our military and make sure that their needs are met, but it makes no difference how well we do that if the nation ultimately collapses due to fiscal irresponsibility.
