I would like to respond to Cal Thomas' column published July 2017, commenting on the Democratic Party's "better deal."
Thomas gives many reasons why Democrats lost the White House, Congress and many statehouses. He lists progressive Democratic proposals as "warmed over hash." There are some statistics that belie Thomas' take.
The approval rating of Congress is 20 percent. President Trump is at about 40 percent. Bernie Sander was most popular among active politicians in a recent Fox News poll, with a 61 percent rating.
In a 2014 Wall Street Journal poll, 82 percent of voters supporting reducing the cost of student loans. Some 66 percent supported boosting the minimum wage. And 59 percent wanted climate change addressed.
How to explain this anomaly? Republicans have spent millions on think tanks staffed with experts. We know from science that people tend to make decisions from their automatic brain, which is highly influence by emotions.
Feelings are easily influenced through clever marketing.
Democrats must learn the secrets of marketing if they want to take advantage of the opinions expressed in the above polls.
