I was disappointed to hear that the only large food store, Save-A-Lot, in western downtown Davenport is closing. The closing leaves a huge hole to fill for residents living in and around the downtown area to shop for groceries. Many of the residents do not have a vehicle and would need to rely on public transportation to visit another food store.
Davenport, like most other cities, is searching for ways to reinvigorate distressed areas within its city limits. Providing access to groceries is perhaps one of the most important steps to undertake in this regard.
Hopefully, a new owner can step in to open a new food store. Or better yet, have the city become more active in helping prospective owners accomplish this important economic venture.
