This is in response to the letter from Sue Griswold of Riverdale, published in the Quad-City Times on Jan. 27.
I want to clarify a statement she made in the third paragraph of her letter. She wrote, “The writer of course quotes the Second Amendment, ignoring 'the well-regulated' part.' Here is the text of the Second Amendment: “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
When reading historical documents, one must understand the definition of words based upon when it was used. At the time this was written the term “well regulated” meant well-rehearsed. Today, we would probably say well-trained or something that would indicate much practicing has been done so as to render actions automatic in case of attack.
