As we approach the 99th anniversary marking the end of the War to End All Wars, it is clear that the U.S. is preparing for World War III. As of this writing, three U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups are gathered in the western Pacific Ocean alongside two submarines. This armada is assembled in addition to the ever present force of 50,000-plus troops in Japan, and 35,000-plus troops in South Korea.

President Trump stood on the floor of the Unite Nations General Assembly several weeks ago and threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea, repeatedly insinuating the only way to deal with North Korea is through military force. Given the close geographical proximity and longstanding diplomatic ties, war with North Korea would almost inevitably lead to war with China, another nuclear armed state.

Members of both parties recently voted to approve a $700 billion defense budget, seemingly for the purpose of permanent warfare. After nearly two decades pursuing a failed strategy involving one foreign military intervention after another, the U.S. stands at the precipice of nuclear war.

I implore Quad-City Times readers to write their representative and senator, and encourage them to support the No Unconstitutional Strike against North Korea Act. Please join the Democratic Socialists of America and Rock Island Alderman Dylan Parker to say no more war on Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 11 a.m., at Reservoir Park, Rock Island.
