Susan Collins of the Container Recycling Institute said recently that recycling “ranks up there with motherhood and apple pie,” according to the Oct. 9 Quad-City Times article. This is pure bunk. I disagree and here a few reasons:
• Most cities have recycling carts/bins for all recyclables. There is no need to drag bags to a grocery store/center.
• Keeping the environment clean is a poor argument for the 5 cent tax. Slobs will always throw bottles and cans out the window. A five cent return won’t stop them.
• Bringing dirty bottles to a clean grocery store is unsanitary; just ask the people who work there.
• One can get tired of being taxed for every returnable bottle and can.
What can citizens do? Make a list of things you want to tell your state of Iowa legislators and put the repeal of the 5 cent law at or near the top.
