In the campaign, Donald Trump said he would freeze immigration. Yet his family has reaped $50 million from the visa program known as EB-5 that grants wealthy foreigners residency in exchange for investing $500,000 in American businesses.
Kushner Companies, the development company run by Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, has raised $50 million through EB-5s for Trump Bay Street, a high-end residential tower now being built in Jersey City.
It is ironic, after a campaign bashing China that nearly all the EB-5 investors in this luxury development are from China. These EB-5s were approved in great haste without criminal background checks, according to a Homeland Security special agent testifying at a U.S. Senate hearing in the spring of 2015, well before Trump became president.
President Trump should crack down on the Trump abuse of the EB-5 visas.
