Junior League of the Quad Cities is the recipient of Necker’s Gift of Giving for the month of August. A portion of all proceeds for the month of August will go to benefit Junior League and their I AM STRONG initiative.

Junior League of the Quad Cities is an organization of women whose mission is to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.  Over the last 33 years, the organization has worked together with community partners to bring Race for the Cure to the Quad Cities, fund and build the Bettendorf McManus Park (also known as “Rocket Park”) and help fund The Learning Campus in Bettendorf.

Currently, Junior League of the Quad Cities is focusing on its’ I AM initiative, a commitment to improve the perception and self-image of women through leadership and empowerment. To this end, JLQC develops and runs a mentorship program for adolescent girls at West High School (WINGs) and partnered with Family Resources’ Bridge House to provide mentoring, a remodeled comfort room and financial support.

As part of the I AM initiative, Junior League of the Quad Cities will host its third annual I AM Strong 5k Mudventure in Coal Valley on Saturday, August 9, 2014. The race is only open to female participants and will begin at 7:40 a.m. Proceeds from the race will fund JLQC's ongoing initiatives and benefit Family Resources' Bridge House. Last year, the race beneficiary was Braking Traffik, and received $10,000 that helped fund a documentary film focusing on the human trafficking issues here in the Quad Cities.

This year's mudventure will be held at Case Creek Obstacle Course.  Located on a farm in Coal Valley, the course combines adventure and mud racing with over 20 obstacles including tire flips, rope pulls, balance challenges and many more. There are recreational and competitive divisions for all levels of ability including walkers. Participants aged 18 and older may select from three separate waves of racers, each beginning with a mandatory kick-off meeting. Wave meetings will be at 7:40 a.m., 8:50 a.m. or 9:50 a.m. on race day. Registration cost is $65; payment includes race entry fee, swag bag, event t-shirt and awards ceremony snack and drink.

Participants may also participate in an optional costume contest. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes and largest team, as well as to the top three competitive division finishers. A post-race party will follow at Azteca III in Bettendorf which will include live music from Wicked Liz and the Belly Swirls, a free taco bar and drink specials. Pre-race packet pick-ups will occur on Friday August 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Active Endeavors (3950 Elmore Avenue, Davenport, Iowa) at which time the race route will be provided.

The I AM Strong Mudventure Race offers women an opportunity to bond and support each other through a fun, but physically challenging exercise. It also fosters collaboration with area businesses to support local charities that positively impact our community by improving the lives of women and girls through leadership and empowerment.  To register or to learn more about the race please visit www.iamstrong5k.org
