The Quad-Cities River Bandits fell behind early and never caught up to lose a series opener at Dayton 5-3 on Thursday to drop to 1-3 on their six-game road trip and fall back to .500 on the season.
Jake Rogers gave the Bandits (18-19) an early lead with his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot with two outs in the first inning. But the Dragons responded with three runs in the home half off Q-C starter Forrest Whitley, whose ERA in four first innings this season stands at 15.75.
After the first, Whitley's ERA is 0.75 in 12 innings. He settled down Thursday, allowing one more run and finishing with six strikeouts in five innings, allowing seven hits.
Rogers finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bandits, while Chuckie Robinson was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Great Lakes 7, Clinton 3: The LumberKings dropped a series opener against Great Lakes at Ashford University Field for their third loss in a row and eighth in their last nine games.
Clinton starter Ljay Newsome fell to 4-2 on the season, allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings as the Loons jumped on top 4-0. Ronald Dominguez came on in relief and allowed three runs on four hits.
Yojhan Quevedo hit his first homer of the season for Clinton (11-20).
