Former University of Iowa basketball player Zach McCabe was arrested Friday for allegedly punching a man in a bar.

McCabe, who finished his college career in March, turned himself in Friday and is being held on $1,500 bond at the Johnson County jail. He was charged with assault causing bodily injury resulting from an incident in D.C.’s bar in downtown Iowa City just after midnight Thursday night.

According to police reports, security video showed McCabe and a woman arguing in the bar. When a man attempted to intervene in the dispute, McCabe allegedly punched him, knocking him to the floor. He then blew the man a kiss and walked out the door.

The 6-foot-6 McCabe, a former Sioux City Heelan player, played in more games than any player in Iowa history (137) and scored 871 career points.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery is currently in Florida but he said in a statement that “after collecting all the facts, I will deal with this situation when I return next week.”

Why should McCaffrey have to investigate this situation? Zach McCabe has graduated, or in the least has used up his eligibility. So it should be that, from a team standpoint, he should face no sanctions. Criminally, it's a different issue.

He was a punk on the court and now showing his thuggish ways off the court.
