Mike Gesell successfully defended his perch, winning a second straight Gatorade Nebraska Boys Basketball Player of the Year honor after taking South Sioux City to the Class B state championship game.

Possibly looking to become Iowa’s starting point guard next season, Gesell compiled senior-year averages of 24.8 points, 7.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.9 steals while shooting 53 percent from the floor, 38 percent from 3-point land and 83 percent at the line. The Cardinals won state titles in 2010 and 2011 with the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Gesell at the helm.

Linn-Mar’s Marcus Paige, a North Carolina signee, was named Iowa’s Gatorade Player of the Year. Since future teammate Harrison Barnes was selected in 2009 and 2010, that means three of Iowa's last four winners are Tar Heels commits.

Gesell becomes Iowa's first Gatorade POY since Matt Gatens (Iowa City High, 2008).
