The Iowa basketball team is in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

The Hawkeyes (5-0) are 23rd in the poll that was released Monday. Iowa State moved up from No. 21 to No. 17.

“I’m just happy for the players,’’ said Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, whose team takes on Xavier on Thursday in th Battle 4 Atlantic tournament in the Bahamas. “I guess in some ways it creates more interest. People talk about you more.’’

But the coach made it pretty clear it’s not that meaningful to him.

“I get why talk about it when the process going on,’’ he said, “but when you come down to it, the only thing that matters is who is on top at the end of the year.’’
