STORYLINES

• Iowa nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the Big Ten season Tuesday night, losing to Michigan State 96-93. The Hawkeyes shot 52.2 percent from the field and led by eight points with eight minutes to go before faltering in the final minutes. Tyler Cook led with 26 points.

• Ohio State, ranked 14th in this week’s Associated Press poll, rallied from a 14-point deficit to defeat No. 3 Purdue in a showdown for first place in the Big Ten on Wednesday. Keita Bates-Diop, the favorite to be named Big Ten player of the year, scored 18 points, including the winning basket with 2.8 seconds to go.

• Ohio State won an earlier meeting between the two teams 92-81 on Jan. 4 in Iowa City. Bates-Diop collected 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead five players in double figures for the Buckeyes, who shot 53 percent from the field. Cook led Iowa with 21 points and nine rebounds.
