Drake freshman Seth VanDeest was selected the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week.

The Bettendorf native averaged 13.5 points and 3.0 blocked shots while shooting 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from the floor and 100 percent from the free-throw line, making all 11 attempts in games against league leader Northern Iowa and Creighton.

He had 20 points, making 6-of-9 shots from the floor and all eight free-throw attempts, while matching a career-high four blocked shots in a 79-74 home victory against Creighton on Saturday.

All-state back picks Bees

Cole Kelly, an Iowa Class 1A first-team all-state football player at West Branch, has announced his intentions to play at St. Ambrose. Kelly, the 1A District 5 offensive player of the year, led the Bears to the state semfinals as a running back and defensive back. He is expected to play defensive back.

Bees picked fifth

The St. Ambrose softball team is picked to finish fifth in the Midwest Collegiate Conference preseason coaches poll released Monday. Grand View edged William Penn for the top spot on the poll, but four teams received first-place votes.

Ashford freshman qualifies for nationals

Ashford freshman Nkemdilim Okwumabua qualified for the NAIA Indoor Championships in the 600-meter dash at the Jack Jennett Invitational at the UNI-Dome this past weekend.

Okwumabua shattered her own record in the 600 meters at 1:38.36, passing the NAIA "A" standard qualifying time. She also broke the 60-meter hurdle school record with a time of 11.21 on Saturday, passing Datisha Duncan's mark set last winter.
