Carroll 77, Augustana 69: For the second straight season, the Augustana men's basketball team found it tough sledding in their visit to face the Carroll Pioneers in Van Male Fieldhouse.
Not able to take advantage of a size advantage against the smaller Pioneers, the nationally ninth-ranked Vikings dropped a 77-69 CCIW decision.
“That's a tough place to win,” said Augie coach Grey Giovanine whose ranked club dropped a five-point decision there last season. “They out-played us. They were coming off a 30-point rout of Elmhurst and had tremendous confidence.”
That attitude carried over as the spunky Pioneers (8-12, 4-7 CCIW) had the second-place Vikings (16-5, 8-4 CCIW) on their heels all game, not relinquishing the lead after the 5:13 mark of the first half.
Instead of Augie being able to take advantage of mismatches, it was the hosts who used speed and agility to run past Augie's defense, staving off a late Viking rally with three straight press-breaking layups.
Olive Harvey 81, Black Hawk 80: After Connor Fuller gave the Braves an 80-79 lead with a pair of free throws, Darius Oliver made a putback with 3 seconds left to give Olive Harvey its 20th win.
Fuller led Black Hawk (8-16) with 32 points, while Larry Dixon contributed 15 points and seven assists.
Carroll 75, Augustana 69: The Vikings fell behind 21-4 after the first quarter and couldn't recover in a CCIW road loss Saturday.
Augustana (12-9, 5-7 CCIW) won the next three quarters but never could close the gap.
Alexis Jones led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds for Augie, while Izzy Anderson and Victoria Allen scored 14 points apiece.
Brittney Wald led all scorers with 22 points for Carroll (7-13, 4-7).
