After a successful first camp in 2011, the Legends of Iowa Football Camp will return to the Quad-Cities in July.
About 600 players participated in kids and legends camps a year ago, receiving instruction from dozens of former Hawkeyes who will participate in a social event for older fans during the three-day event.
“We had a great turnout at the camps a year ago, and the
feedback we received from the parents and kids was great,” camp coordinator Matt Hughes said. “The camps are designed to give the kids a chance to interact and get to know former Hawkeyes and a have a chance not only to learn the game but to learn life lessons and understand the importance of character.”
This year’s camps will be July 5-7 on the practice fields at
Bettendorf High School.
Hughes said a few changes designed to improve the efficiency of the camps have been made, including an adjustment in the timing and setup for an autograph session that is part of the kids camp.
The kids camp is designed for players entering grades 1-5 in the fall of 2012. The session is from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 5 after a registration and autograph session scheduled for 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m.
“We spend a lot of time at the kids camp introducing football and skills to youngsters who are just learning the game,” Hughes said. “There is plenty of opportunity for them to interact with some NFL players who are former Hawkeyes. It’s a lot of fun.”
The legends camp is for players entering grades 6-12 in the fall, and players are broken down into two age groups, one for players entering grades 6-8 and a second for players entering grades 9-12. The legends camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 6 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 7.
“Things get a little more technical and skill oriented at the legends camp,” Hughes said. “We mix in some games where the teams are coached by former Hawkeyes. The guys will hear from the former players about the importance of character, class and dealing with adversity throughout both days. It’s a more intense camp experience.”
Registration for both camps can be done at legendsofiowa.com. Participation in the kids camp is $65, and the legends camp is $180. Discounts are available for registrations received by Saturday.
Former Hawkeyes will participate in a social and silent auction that will be July 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Isle of Capri in Bettendorf. Tickets are $50 and be obtained at legendsofiowa.com. As is the case with the camps, all proceeds benefit charity.
“It’s a great chance for people to meet the former players, get some autographs and spend time sharing stories with the Hawkeyes they remember watching,” Hughes said. “It’s an informal event, and we’re hoping that more people will participate. It’s a part of the event that we would like to grow.”
Monies raised from last year’s camp benefited the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital and the Brett Greenwood Foundation.
