Former Davenport North swimmer Michael Brus was named the men’s swimmer of the year as Grinnell College won its 12th consecutive Midwest Conference swimming championship over the weekend.

Brus, a junior, achieved the NCAA “A’’ standard in the 200 backstroke and was just two tenths of a second from setting the NCAA Division-III record in the event. He won in the finals by nearly 11 seconds.

Brus also was the individual winner of the 200 and 500 freestyles and swam on four winning relays — the 200 medley, 400 medley, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle.
