Despite not having a single wrestler win an individual title, Illinois had enough depth to nose out Virginia Tech for the team title of the Midlands Championships, scoring 99.5 points to win by two points at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Jesse Delgado and BJ Futrell were the only Illini to reach the finals. Delgado fell by a 5-1 count in the 125 final to Virginia Tech's Jarrod Garnett, while Futrell lost by the same count to Kendric Maple of Oklahoma.
Iowa freshmen Cory Clark and Sammy Brooks wrapped their Midlands' debuts with respective top-eight finishes. Clark, the tournament's No. 3 seed at 125, lost a 10-6 decision to Garnett in the semifinals and ended the tournament with a fourth-place finish.
Brooks advanced to the medal round with a 5-3 win over No. 9 Mac Stoll of North Dakota State in the wrestle-backs. He lost a 7-1 decision to Jake Waste of Buffalo to finish eighth in the 184-pound bracket.
Former Hawkeye All-American and 2008 Midlands champion Daniel Dennis finished runner-up at 133 pounds. Former Hawkeye All-American Montell Marion finished third at 149 pounds.
Neither Northern Iowa nor Iowa State had a wrestler place in the top three. The Panthers finished in 13th place as a team, while the Cyclones tied North Carolina for 17th.
