Senior Steele Jantz, pictured, will open the 2012 football season behind center for the Iowa State football team.
Coach Paul Rhoads announced Tuesday that Jantz will start at quarterback for the Cyclones in their Sept. 1 season opener against Tulsa, beating out Jared Barnett for the starting role.
“Steele has demonstrated the skill set I think is ideal for our offense,” Rhoads said. “The main part is that we have depth at the quarterback position.”
Jantz threw for 1,519 yards and 10 touchdowns while starting seven games last season for Iowa State, his most productive coming against Iowa when he completed 25-of-37 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 42 yards.
