St. Ambrose 70, Mount Mercy 54: St. Ambrose clinched a share of its first conference men’s basketball title since 2005 on Wednesday, avenging an earlier loss to Mount Mercy with a 70-54 Midwest Collegiate Conference victory in Cedar Rapids.

The win was the ninth straight for the 18th-ranked Fighting Bees (19-8, 13-2 MCC), who own a three-game lead over Ashford and William Penn with three games remaining in the regular season and claimed their 10th conference title since the league began play in the 1988-89 season.

Because St. Ambrose has swept both second-place teams, the Bees also clinched one of the league’s two automatic berths for the NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament with the win over the Mustangs.

Led by 25 points from Marquez Davis, the Bees went on a 23-11 run over the final 10 minutes of the first half, opening a 37-25 lead by halftime and never letting Mount Mercy (16-10, 7-8) get within single digits during the second half.

Chris Donnelly finished with a double-double for St. Ambrose, grabbing 11 rebounds to go with 11 points, while Justin Blondell finished with 13 for the Bees. Troy Peter led the Mustangs with 13.
