The St. Ambrose football program is bringing back a familiar face.
The team announced Friday the hiring of Vince Fillipp as defensive coordinator, as well as the promotion of Brody Pogue to offensive line coach.
Fillipp, a four-year starter and 2008 All-American defensive lineman for the Bees, returns to Davenport after spending the last three seasons as the defensive and recruiting coordinator at Kansas Wesleyan University under former Bettendorf standout and St. Ambrose assistant Matt Drinkall.
Fillipp is the fourth defensive coordinator in the last four seasons for the Bees, who went 4-6 and allowed 29.6 points per game last year.
Fillipp was on St. Ambrose head coach Mike Magistrelli's staff from 2009-13 before spending a year as defensive line coach at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana before joining Drinkall at Kansas Wesleyan. Over the last two years, the Coyotes ranked in the top four in the Kansas Conference in both total defense and scoring defense.
"I am extremely excited to bring Vince Fillipp back to our coaching staff," Magistrelli said. "Vince brings not only defensive coordinating experience but also deep love and connection with St. Ambrose University and our football program."
Pogue spent last season as a graduate assistant at St. Ambrose coaching running backs. Pogue was a first-team all-conference offensive lineman at Illinois College, graduating in 2015. During Pogue's collegiate career, the Blueboys set several school and national offensive records and finished in the top 10 in multiple offensive categories each year.
"I am just as excited to have Brody coaching our offensive line in a full time capacity," Magistrelli said. "He has a working knowledge of our program having been on staff for a year but also brings great perspective having been a part of another successful program at Illinois College."
