One in a series of looks at the Iowa football program’s 2014 recruiting class, position by position:

The newcomers

Terrence Harris, 6-3, 250, Englewood, N.J. (Paramus Catholic)

Matt Nelson, 6-8, 255, Cedar Rapids, Iowa (Xavier)

The details

TERRENCE HARRIS: Part of a tradition-rich program at Paramus Catholic in northern New Jersey, the Hawkeyes recruited Harris as a defensive end. … He earned first team all-state, all-conference and all-county as a senior. … He completed his senior season with 82 tackles, including six sacks. Harris also forced a pair of fumbles. … As a junior, earning second-team all-conference honors, he recorded 80 tackles with 10 sacks, four forced fumbles. … His high school coach was Chris Partridge.

MATT NELSON: An elite all-state team choice as a senior and first-team all-state pick as a junior, Nelson has ranked among the state’s top defensive ends and tight ends the past two years on teams which compiled a 25-2 record at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids. … Selecting Iowa over offers from Stanford and Notre Dame, he was recruited by the Hawkeyes as a defensive end. … He counted 13 tackles for a loss and nine sacks among the 43 tackles he recorded as a senior. … During his junior year, he finished with 47 tackles including 19 tackles for a loss and 11 sacks. … On offense, he caught 13 passes for 146 yards and four touchdowns as a senior. … Nelson is also a three-year letterwinner in basketball at Xavier. … Duane Schulte was his high school football coach.

The thoughts

Coach Kirk Ferentz on the Hawkeyes’ defensive line recruits:

On Nelson: “I talked to someone from a pretty prestigious school who thought he was as good a tight end prospect as they’ve had – his high school coach relayed that to me and I could see that – but we think he’s going to be a good defensive end. … He came here and competed (during a camp last June) and the way he wanted to be coached and compete that day, it was really impressive to us. Our intentions are wholly to keep him in that defensive end position and we’re awfully excited to have him join the class.’’
