NATE WIELAND:  Three-year varsity starter for the Little Hawks, playing quarterback, defensive back and linebacker. … Earned first-team all-state honors a senior. … Was named first-team all-conference as a sophomore and first team all-district as a senior. … Missed the majority of his junior season because of injuries. … Completed 110-of-196 passes for 1,671 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior in addition to rushing for 741 yards and 11 scores. … Ranked third in Class 4A while averaging 41.1 yards on 29 punts during his senior season. … Initially committed to Northern Illinois as a quarterback recruit before Iowa offered him as a linebacker. … Completed 104-of-201 passes for 1,093 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 753 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore. … Two-year letterwinner for City High in basketball and track, where he competes in sprints, high jump and long jump.

Coach Kirk Ferentz on Nate Wieland, the lone linebacker to sign with Iowa in the 2017 class:

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Nate Wieland ends up being a linebacker. That’s what I envision him being. If not, we’ve got a good safety, too. I see him in that Anthony Hitchens or Chad Greenway mold. I don’t want to say Chad, he’s played 20 years in the NFL so that may not be a fair comparison, but he’s the same type of player.’’
