Iowa freshman kicker Keith Duncan and holder Ron Coluzzi (16) run down the field celebrating his game-winning 33-yard field goal over No. 3 Michigan on Nov. 12, 2016, at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.

One in a series of looks at the Iowa football program’s 2017 recruiting class, position by position:

The newcomer

Ryan Gersonde, 6-4, 185, Milwaukee (Marquette University HS)

The details

RYAN GERSONDE: Australian-born punter was a prep all-American as a senior. … Was a first-team all-state selection in Wisconsin, earning all-region and all-conference honors as well while playing receiver and punting for Marquette University High School. … Punting in both a traditional style and a rugby style, he averaged 39.8 yards per punt last season, downing eight punts inside the 20-yard line. … Is a basketball letterwinnner as well.

The thoughts

Coach Kirk Ferentz on the need for a punter in this class to be part of Iowa’s specialists:

“If you look at what Ron Coluzzi did for us a year ago, the impact was significant. We want to create some good competition within the specialists we have in the program.’’
