Saturday wasn’t a total loss for the Iowa football program. Shortly after the Hawkeyes lost their season opener to Northern Illinois, Iowa scored the first verbal commitment for its 2015 recruiting class.

Jake Newborg, a 6-foot-2, 271-pound lineman who is a junior at West Lyon High School in Inwood, Iowa, announced on Twitter that he committed to the Hawkeyes after making an official visit during Saturday’s game.

“Just made one of the biggest decisions of my life. I’ve decided to become a Hawkeye! Dream come true!’’ Newborg wrote.

A third-team all-state selection by the Iowa Newspaper Association last fall as a defensive lineman, he was offered by Iowa after attending a summer camp. Newborg is one of three in-state juniors who hold scholarship offers from the Hawkeyes. Twins Levi and Landan Paulsen of Woodbury Central, both linemen, are the others.
