Wilton 4, Mediapolis 2: As Mediapolis starter Tim Diewold began losing command of the strike zone in the second inning against Wilton in a district baseball final on Saturday, the Beavers' patience at the plate paid off.
Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the second inning, Kaleb Timmsen reached base on a single before the next four Wilton batters − Brady Barrett, Tyler Hartman, Nolan Leaton and Jake Lenker − all drew walks, with Leaton and Lenker each knocking in one run.
The next batter, Cory Anderson, was hit by a pitch to give the Beavers a 3-2 lead that they were able to hold on to for the district championship.
"We were patient there in the second inning," Wilton coach Jake Souhrada said. "We took what they gave us, got three runs on a couple hits. Obviously it was enough to hold on with."
Wilton's Colin McCrabb came in to relieve starter Cory Anderson in the third and was able to finish the game allowing no runs and just one hit.
The Beavers other run came on a errant pick-off attempt to first base in the fifth, allowing Evan Reifert to score from third to make the score 4-2.
Wilton will play Iowa City Regina in a substate matchup Tuesday at Solon.
Cascade 10, Northeast 0: Cascade batted around and scored five runs in the bottom of the first and Northeast never recovered in a Class 2A district final.
Northeast's season comes to an end at 20-13, while Cascade moves on to face Beckman on Tuesday for a trip to state.
