EIGHT-MAN FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
PRESTON, Iowa - Leave it to Preston's defense to become the showstopper in an offensive battle. But while the defense crashed the party, the Trojans offense showed up fashionably late and kept Preston's undefeated season alive.
Kyle Feller ran 32 times for 212 yards, Jason Feddersen accounted for four touchdowns and the Preston defense stoned Blairsburg Northeast Hamilton 33-20 in Monday's eight-player first-round playoff game.
"We take a lot of pride in our defense," Feller said. "We feel like we can move the ball on anybody, and it just comes down to the 'D.' If we can hold them, we're going to have a great shot every game."
In a matchup of two Trojans teams that score in bunches, Preston (11-0) came out dominant on defense, sending Hamilton back to the locker room at the half without a point.
"They just outplayed us up front on the defensive line," Hamilton coach John Seiser said. "They had pressure on us all night, and we didn't pick things up very well."
While the Preston offense stutter-stepped into the game - fumbling on the first offensive snap and committing four penalties on the second drive - it was flawless the remainder of the first half, scoring touchdowns on its next four drives.
"We always preach to them how great teams overcome adversity," Preston coach Kevin Behr said. "They have a very explosive offense, so we had tried to focus on grinding out, because when their offense isn't on the field, they won't be able to score."
Feller and fullback Austin Hughes carried the offense for much of Preston's second year in 8-player, but a couple of unsung heroes are making the difference for the Trojans in the postseason. Senior Luke Assenmacher ran seven times for 34 yards, and also caught a critical third-down, 4-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.
The man - er, boy - who threw it to him was Feddersen, who had already run for three scores in the game. The sophomore quarterback has now either thrown or run for nine touchdowns in two postseason performances, guiding the Trojans to 106 points against Clarksville and Hamilton (10-2).
"So far, for a 15-year-old sophomore, he's playing like a fifth-year senior," Behr said. "I preach to him to not turn the ball over, and he's just being a great manager on the offense right now."
Preston will hit the road for the first time this postseason, preparing for a rematch with Maynard West Central, a team the Trojans beat 23-22 on Oct. 2.
"We kind of wanted to play a team we already played once," Feller said. "It's going to be a lot of fun going up there."
