MORRISON, Ill. - Brandon Evans' body language told a tale of pain Saturday.
With 14 touchdowns and 1,000-plus yards rushing coming in, Evans made Deer Creek-Mackinaw football opponents suffer for nine weeks and was a principal reason behind the Chiefs' amassing almost 30 points a game in the regular season and qualification for the Class 2A state playoffs.
But some time during the Chiefs' visit to No. 1-ranked Morrison on Saturday, Evans was the one doing the suffering as the Mustangs delivered a 55-20 beatdown. In so doing, Morrison - other than a couple home-run pass plays by the Chiefs - looked every bit like a No. 1 team.
"We have to try to stop big plays," Morrison's Josh Vos said afterward. "We have given them up all season; we've got to be able to stay focused defensively. We can't afford to have those."
Outside of that,
Morrison (10-0) was a juggernaut. Led by Vos and his 212-yard, four-touchdown rushing effort, the Mustangs moved
efficiently on offense. Left halfback Kyle Janssen added a pair of early
rushing TDs and had 82 yards rushing, all but 9 of those coming in the first half. Vos, a fullback, had 104 first-half yards and 108 in the second.
And senior Patrick Wagenecht filled in for right halfback Conner Bealer, who tweaked an ankle a couple of weeks back and was held out as a precaution Saturday. Wagenecht added 36 yards on 10 carries. The trio provided a significant majority of the fuel
Morrison needed to generate a 410-yard day of offense.
"Patrick had to come in, and he'd never played running back before," Janssen said. "But our (offensive) line is incredible, and the three of us have been good at reading our blocks."
Dee-Mack (5-5) had 8 yards in the first quarter and minus-1 rushing yards at halftime. At the same time, the Mustang offense had 253 yards and a 28-8 halftime lead.
"It's like Mike Tyson: Everybody has a plan to beat them until you first get hit," Dee-Mack coach Job Linboom said. "Nobody has been able to slow them down all year. (Offensively) we tried everything, and they stopped everything."
