GENESEO, Ill. - Geneseo football fans are used to fireworks shows for home games at Bob Reade Field. The Maple Leafs are pretty explosive themselves.
Luke Lembke had touchdown runs of 70 and 62 yards.
Jason Johnson scored from 67 and 35 yards out.
And slow-starting Geneseo reeled off 33 unanswered points for a 33-16 Class 4A opening-round victory over Plano on a gusty Friday night, advancing the Leafs to the second round.
Throw in a 23-yard touchdown completion on fourth-and-8 from Geneseo quarterback Michael Atwell to Lembke, and the Maple Leafs (8-2) scored five touchdowns without penetrating the Plano red zone.
"(Long runs) are real fun, especially since a couple of times this year I broke a few and I got caught," the 6-foot, 220-pound Johnson said. "So it was good to be able to just run into the end zone without getting touched."
Plano (6-4) scored the early momentum with Justin O'Hara's 55-yard punt return for a score, and after Geraldo Garcia ran it in from 3 yards, the Reapers' second straight two-point conversion gave them a 16-0 lead.
But Lembke raced 70 yards down the right sideline before the half, cutting the lead to 10.
"It could have been a lot worse at halftime," Johnson acknowledged. "We had a couple good drives, and the defense put some heart into it."
Facing a fourth-and-8 from the Plano 23-yard line in the third quarter, Geneseo coach Larry Johnsen Jr. aced a gutsy call, sending Lembke out on a wheel route, and Atwell hit him for the score.
"They didn't expect the pass, so we just beat them deep," Lembke said. "We just wanted to pass it up and loosen them up, get their guys off the line so we could get some running room."
Did they ever.
Lembke and Johnson combined for 254 rushing yards on 16 carries, mainly because of their four touchdown runs amassing 234 yards.
"They had some good speed, but we knew with their size, we would struggle," Plano coach Jim Green said. "Their physicality in the second half really got to us."
